Disturbed Shouting?

I have written a lot about remakes and as I think about it there are more and more songs that I find are remade that are good.  Here is a case in point.  Here is one "metal" band that does a lot of shouting with a killer song. The band has released 5 albums of which 4 albums have debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts.  The band was originally called Brawl it wasnt till they were "stupify"-ed on their second album that go us down with "The Sickness" were they called Disturbed.

One of the band members actually did the opposite in the file sharing controversy.  He fought against the RIAA  to stop them from going after kids and to adopt a better policy with internet usage.

Well after their 5th album they announced this year that they wont be touring in 2012 and will be on an indifinate hiatus.  Sorry Disturbed fans but no you will have to "Shout" thanks to the Tears for Fears original!

What Do They Have in Common

Here is a trick question for you.  What do California, platinum, gold, green, and purple all have in common?   The answer is one album 8x platinum, 40 million records sold, two Grammy awards and the title of an album "Purple".  The other is the daily view of one Scott Weiland who cant ever seem to lay off the drugs.  He is like Charlie Sheen of the music world.

Stone Temple Pilots album Core was 8x platinum and they scored big with songs like "Plush" which won them a Grammy award for best Hard Rock Performance.  They are ranked #40 on VH1s greatest 100 rock bands.  Yes they are a California band (San Diego).  Their second album was called "Purple" and had a few hits.  All in all they were a commercial success.

Believe it or not though that success was met with critics tough reviews who called them "imitators" and "second rate" in comparison to Nirvana and Pearl Jam.  Well fortunately I will let you be the judge and let you know that I dont think they are second rate or imitators.  They are great.

Here is one of my favorite songs from them from Purple it is:

iTunes Radio Station

I might be a little behind the times but I havent really been interested in some of the "radio stations" that you can play off iTunes.  I was out of musical options one day and I decided to try it out.  Under Alternative Rock the second one down the list was Ace Radio - 90s Alternative.  I tried it out and I love it!

This station is a combination of all the rock songs that I love from the 90s it is like listening to my old cds again! It is awesome!  I definately recommend it.

It does have a website as well www.aceradio.net I havent been to it yet so I cant speak to content but listening on iTunes is great!

Stellar Video

It is common knowledge that Seattle was the "birthplace" of Grunge music.  Many dont know that broke off into many difference segments.  The Deftones spun off that movement and appeal to a specific audience.  Well from the wake of the Deftones' influence came a great band who I really enjoy a lot.

They are a big name in the rock world.  Their second album "Make Yourself" was fantastic.  Their third album was as well "Morning View" and the pattern continues.

I really wanted to share this track from their Make Yourself album since the video is pretty cool.  Although this might not be their best it is a great track for sure and one of my favorites.

Playing with Cold

There is just a fantastic band that I am sure that you are all familiar with.  This band is a british band that many people took a while to warm up to and many people only know them by color...Yellow

Well Coldplay is no secret anymore.  Their new song for their new album is out.  It is always a good day when new stuff comes out from a great band.  Enjoy!

What It's Like for Someone Else

Ever have one of those days when you feel really sorry for yourself?  Sure, we all do.  I think it is human nature to think that.  Sometimes you think things are harder for you than another person.  I think this song puts that into perspective for me.

30 Seconds to Spare

There are a lot of good new bands out there.  It seems this particular band I half like and half dont.  It took a while for me to enjoy this song.  The video is a little odd.  You will recognize this band from their huge song "the kill".

30 Seconds to Mars - Kings and Queens

Waiting for it

This band is pretty awesome as most people know.  They dont need any intro and are quite popular.  They are featured on lots of soundtracks and are always on radio stations.  I wanted to feature them because I really love this song lately but also cus the music video is kind of cool.

Better in Black

One morning it was dark, cold, rainy with very black clouds.  I was not at all excited that I got up, let alone that I was headed into work.  I flipped on the radio looking for something to at least give me a boost in mood.  Immediate this song came on.

Who could argue that one of the best alternative/grunge bands ever.  One of the best albums of all time for me is Ten.  From 1991 this album has remained a classic.  No introduction or background is needed for Pearl Jam.  It is a shame I havent written about that before!

In the Meantime

I was flipping through the radio channels in my car on the way home from work and realized that it has been quite a long time since I have posted something here.  While I was thinking about this I flipped through the stations came acorss one of Pink's new songs...flipped through the rest found Van Halen "Jump" and flipped back to Pink.  I immediately questioned myself WTW (what the world...keepin language clean here).  Flipped it back to Van Halen and enjoyed the rock out for a few minutes.

I realized what is my life coming to that I am to busy to enjoy good music anymore and when I get to listen to so I resort to the links of pop music like Pink....bring back the rock.

So while I battle with my busy life.  In the meantime enjoy this song from the 95.  It is from what many consider a one hit wonder band.  They did have another hit that was decent but didnt get near the exposure that it deserved.  The band toured with the likes of Pearl Jam.  They even got lent the talent of Michael Stipe from R.E.M on vocals once.  The band high big with this single and released a second album.  After which Electra Records dropped them and their popularity died out.  It is a shame cus this is a rockin song!

The Sound of Spoons

There are many different things you can use to play music. I mean come on people from the Caribbean can turn steel into drums and make it a whole unique sound and culture. Why not do it with something else....how about a Spoon? Yes, a spoon! Leave it to the unique individuals of the Seattle area to do it too. Well grunge rock band Soundgarden did just that. They formed in the Seattle area, and I am willing to bet they played on corner on Pikes Market a few times.

From there very popular 90s days and their Superunknown album here is iconic voice of Chris Cornell. The album has to be a staple for every rocker! If you dont know it, that is a darn shame. The band won to grammies from this album for "Black Hole Sun" and this song.

Another Cover Song

Some people love cover songs.  They have become so common they do it at concerts and some artists even do one cover every album.  It does cost a good deal to do this but it attracts buyers and concert goers so why not.  Sadly most covers really just arent that great.  Yes, I am being like Simon here but it is the truth.

One band that seems to be covered a whole lot is Depeche Mode or as some people like to call them "Dmode".  Well the band Failure took "Enjoy the Silence" and made it fantastic.  They released it on the tribute to Dmode album and their own album.  I really like the the way they kept it the same but put more modern distortion into it and made it a bit more hard rock and still tradition at the same time.

Never Heard of Them

There are some great bands out there that many people havent heard of.  Back in the 90s this band caught my ear with this song.  I really like it a lot since it in line with my style of music.  I bought the album on a sale and loved it!  I wanted more from them but of course they didnt have much success and nothing else really came.  Their songs were more popular in Japan than here in the U.S.

The band hails from Santa Barbara, CA and toured with Toad the Wet Sprocket (also from Santa Barbara) and Tonic (from Fresno, CA) and Failure (also another unknown but decent band).  But their songs have appeared on several soundtracks and one of them even made it on an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer...wow thats an old show.

One Bad View

Sometimes there are songs that really just describe the crappy view you have on life.  These are one of them and for many years I really felt this was my life.  Sometimes everything does fall apart and all you can do is just put it back together just to have it fall apart again.  Still true today but you how you see it really is the difference.

Dog's Eye View only really had decent success with this song and it is a bit of a shame.  They were pretty good. They do have some other good tracks one of which was on the Cant Hardly Wait Soundtrack.  The band back in the late 90s toured with the likes of Del Amitri, Counting Crows and The Wallflowers.  Not a bad way to tour I say.

YouTube Made the Rock Star Give Hugs?

YouTube is an icon now in for distributing all kinds of videos.  Years a few guys from Australia in their spare time from their jobs and lives loaded a song onto YouTube in support of the Free Hugs project.  It has now had well over 68 million views and launched them into stardum.  They just released their third album with their second well known single which has gotten decent radio play.

The band has a name that you would think was kind of a sadist name, Sick Puppies.  I mean come on who doesnt love a puppy.  Well either way the music rocks!  It was one of my favorite rock songs of the last 6 years.

Pickin Up

I really just can ever get enough of this next song.  Perhaps I have written about it before but I really just love this song.  It is a bit old but none-the-less a goodie!  Their music is a big rang from quiet and mellow to really loud and I kind of like it.

Silversun Pickups were nominated in 2009 for a Grammy in Best New Artist though technically the album released that year was their third.  Apparently there was controversy over this nomination for obvious reasons.  But they weren't the first to be nominated in a best new artist category when they previously had already release records/singles.  This track was their big break out hit and still is my favorite.  You can hear "Panic Switch" which probably earned their Grammy nod but this track is better.

Everyone Loves a Parade

There was a band that was pretty heavy into Punk that did very well off one track from their first album and had a good follow up.  They did break up and subsequently have reformed minus a few founding members and had a hit song.

One of the first of a few bands that united punk/rock with rap type lyrics.  Rage Against the Machine had some great hits that were great for working off aggression for me while I was in school.  Plus they just rocked the speakers...perhaps that is why all my parents cars had fuzzy speakers.

Been In a Cave

It has been a while since I have written here but I have really gotten into a new song that I think is great.  It took me a while to warm up to it but I really love the combo of the banjo folk scene with the rock behind.  Is it singing  or talking or just really good?

Songs For Everyone

There are a lot of songs out there that everyone can like no matter what kind of genere they listen country, rock, rap, r&b, etc.  There is one bad that just can pump out these kind of songs like nobody's business.

In the wake of the earthquake and the tsunami in Japan this seems even more appropriate to make sure you all dont miss or forget this song or the disaster.  This is just like the Tsunami in the Indian Ocean that was so bad and just like Katrina!  So help, donate and remember all you got is One

Sometimes It isnt Alright

I have had a long break from this blog which wasnt fully intentional.  So many things have happened. I head a song the other day on my pandora that I havent heard in a while and really needed to share it.

This song is great because it tells us that sometimes things arent alright and it talks about the pains of divorce which everyone needs to remember.  It actually comes from a band that I didnt expect it to but it perhaps is my favorite song from this band
